Rachel Peters, Binibining Pilipinas

The Binibining Pilipinas pageant is one of the biggest annual events in the country. Thousands of Filipinos have their eyes glued on their television screens as they wait for the successor of the crown. This year, it was Rachel Peters who bested 39 other hopefuls in the prestigious pageant organized by chairwoman Stella Marquez-Araneta.

Twenty-five-year-old Rachel Peters is a native of Naga City, Camarines Sur. This is her second time competing in a major beauty pageant, the first being the Miss World Philippines competition back in 2014. The 5’9″ beauty was named the fourth princess that night.

Peters is a La Trobe University in Australia alumna with a degree in business and tourism and now works as an event organizer. She completed her international baccalaureate at the British School in Phuket, Thailand.

A crown-worthy moment

During the question and answer portion, Peters was asked by European Union ambassador Franz Jessen about what she wanted to say to the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) committee, should she be given a chance to speak at the regional summit. Speaking like a true queen, Peters said this:

I believe that one of the biggest problems that our country faces today is divisiveness—in politics, in religion, and also in culture. And I believe that it’s something that is the same across the world.

“And so that is something I would want to address. I believe that when people can learn to tolerate each other’s differences and respect each other’s opinions, then we will be a stronger nation and world.”

Aside from Peters, five other candidates were crowned during Sunday’s pageant. Maria Angelica De Leon was named Bb. Pilipinas 2017 International, Chanel Olive Thomas is Bb. Pilipinas 2017 Supranational, Nelda Ibe is Bb. Pilipinas 2017 Globe, and crowd favorite Katarina Rodriguez was crowned Bb. Pilipinas 2017 Intercontinental.

Runners-up were Charmaine Elima and Kristel Guelos as first and second runner-up, respectively.

The Binibining Pilipinas pageant was truly a night to remember as a number of surprising contestants emerged on top. The country is now counting on Rachel Peters and the rest of the crowned winners to bring back titles from their respective international pageants. The Philippines currently holds three Miss Universe crowns under its belt, tying the country with Sweden as the fourth-highest number of Miss Universe wins. Rounding up the list are the United States, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico.
